Sight Fishing Secrets for Catching Trout
with Landon Mayer

Pasadena Casting Club Clubhouse
Lower Arroyo Seco Park

The biggest thrill for most fly fishers, and what draws more people to the sport, is the idea of spotting a fish, stalking it, fooling it with a properly presented fly, and then releasing it to fight another day. It sounds nice in theory, but doesn’t prove so easy in practice, even to those of us who have been practicing for decades. This month, rather than having a location-oriented program, we are going to be concentrating on technique instead. The technique is sight fishing, and we are bringing in an acknowledged expert in the field, Landon Mayer.

Landon will be showing us tactics for spotting, casting to, and catching resident and migrating trout in freestone streams, tailwaters, and stillwaters using all types of flies. Landon will be illustrating his techniques in a variety of locations including Montana, Colorado, the Great Lakes, and Alaska. Landon’s is addicted to pursuing large trout with small flies and lightweight fly tackle.

Landon was born and raised in Colorado Springs where he began his fly fishing career in the 6th grade when his middle school offered fly casting lessons. As a teenager, Landon spent his free time hanging out in local fly shops and watching VHS tapes by Gary Borger and Doug Swisher until the tapes actually wore out!

After high school, Landon became a full time guide in Colorado, learning from great Colorado anglers such as Ed Engle, Pat Dorsey, and fly tyer John Barr. At the same time, Landon began publishing articles in magazines High Country Angler, American Angler, Fly Rod & Reel, and Fly Fisherman.

In 2007, Landon’s first book, How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life, was published by Wild River Press, followed by his DVD Landing the Trout of Your Life. With his own guide service going full tilt, Landon went on to share even more techniques and secrets in his books Sight Fishing for Trout (Stackpole Books 2010) and Colorado’s Best Fly Fishing (Stackpole/Headwater Books 2011), as well as the 2008 DVD Weapons of Bass Production. His fourth book, On the Water with Landon Mayer, is scheduled for publication in 2014.

Together with his wife Michelle (who shares his passion for the sport) and their four children, Landon lives near his home waters of the South Platte River in Colorado where he teaches fly fishing through guiding, classes, and by giving presentations throughout the country. You can learn more about Landon at his website: www.landonmayer.com. All the photos you see on this page were taken by Landon Mayer himself.

This meeting begins our summer season at the Clubhouse. Enjoy a great fly fishing program outdoors this Thursday evening, July 11th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Casting Club Clubhouse in the Lower Arroyo Seco (go to www.pasadenacastingclub.org for a map and directions). Although the meeting will be starting at 7:30 p.m., don’t miss the French-themed dinner which will be served by Paul Payan at 6:30 p.m. preceding the meeting at the Clubhouse (see notice elsewhere in Fish Tales)..
